BAVEEN GUPTA , SCHOOL COUNSELLOR, MODERN SCHOOL, BARAKHAMBA ROAD, ANSWERS THE MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the dos and don’ts of attempting a question?
A student should read the question carefully and try to comprehend what exactly it is asking for. Sometimes a student may be too eager to get going, but one should remember that there may be a catch at the end of the question. Thus, the best way to answer is with clarity, knowledge of content and application in keeping with the requirement of the question. The presentation is equally important. Pay attention to neatness, legibility, spellings and grammar. Lastly, students must make it a point to revise carefully.

Is it necessary to answer questions in a particular order?
Yes, it is important to maintain a sequence. The examinee has to fill in the marks on a separate sheet of paper. A randomly answered paper may confuse the examinee and ruin the overall impression.

Is it enough if students focus on the NCERT books and solve the latest CBSE sample papers?
Yes, it is. However, a student may — in course of the year — consult other references too. This will help strengthen his/her knowledge base. However, as far as the board exam is concerned, it should only encompass the NCERT syllabus and content. Students are likely to score well if their answers reflect thorough knowledge of the NCERT text. However CBSE sample papers are a good way to improve on your presentation skills.

Will the pattern of examination be different this year?
No, the pattern will be the same as last year.

Is there negative marking for exceeding the word limit?
Yes. Exceeding the word limit reflects that the student lacks precision and clarity.

Any additional tips on how to tackle a question paper?
Try and relax before the paper. That’ll shows optimise that your , performance stress mars . Research one’s performance. Also, students should avoid reading the entire question paper at the very first opportunity. In case one does not know even three out of 20 questions, it may cause anxiety and one may forget parts of the well-prepared questions. Instead, take each question and read it carefully. Write the answer to the best of your ability and leave space if you are not satisfied. Move on to the next question and come back to the ones you have left out once you are done. Since your brain is now actively in the recall mode, you may be able to answer the ones you thought you did not know
