A large number of Delhi University teachers began an indefinite strike on Monday i.e, December 15 2008 to protest against delay in deciding pay revision of university and college teachers by the Union Government.

The Federation of Central Universities Teachers? Associations had given the call for the strike. ?We have received messages from teachers? associations of various Central Universities including Aligarh Muslim University, Allahabad Central University, Assam Central University, Gurukul Kangri Vishwavidyalaya, Indira Gandhi National Open University, Jamia Millia Islamia and Visva Bharati, about their teachers observing strike,? said FEDCUTA and Delhi University Teachers? Association president Aditya Narayan Misra on Monday.

However, there were some colleges where faculty members in some departments did take classes.

?They may have been guest teachers. Guest faculties are not members of the DUTA. But almost all colleges supported our strike call,? Mr. Misra added.

Academic Council member Pradeep Kumar said ad hoc teachers may have taken some classes in colleges. ?Several teachers had come to the colleges to submit question papers for the internal examinations that begin in January,? he said.

DUTA joint secretary Sanjay Kumar said some ?interaction sessions? could have happened in colleges.

?Though the majority of teachers did not take classes, there may have been some sessions on account of internal examination. Teachers may have discussed with students some topics that were not covered but have been included in the internal exam. Also, this was the first day and students did not know about the indefinite strike,? he pointed out.

While Jawaharlal Nehru University is on a winter break, its teachers? association president Kamal Mitra Chenoy said it supported the FEDCUTA movement.

Jamia Millia Islamia Teachers? Association president Tabrez Alam Khan claimed there was a complete boycott by faculty members on the campus.During the elections of teacher representatives for the Academic Council and the Executive Council of Delhi University on Friday, the DUTA units would hold demonstrations in their respective colleges and departments. The FEDCUTA will continue with its strike till an announcement on pay revision is made. On December 22, it will organise a march to Parliament to intensify the protest.
