What posed to be a revolutionary move towards modernising Delhi University’s approach towards education has been caught by strong winds blowing in the opposite direction. The Vice Chancellor, Deepak Pental's decision to incorporate a semester based system was being pegged as the next big move towards making the education system more relevant and as an initiative to overhaul the system.

It has been facing stiff resistance from the teachers but the VC is standing firm on his ground and could not be budged even after the DU teachers finished their weeklong strike against its stand of implementing the semester system from the upcoming academic year 2010-2011 on February 19, 2010. The leadership of the Delhi University Teacher’s Association has categorically warned  the administration of a massive strike if the proposal is not rolled back. The problem is getting complicated given the small amount time left for the admission procedure to take off. The DUTA strike can seriously dent the academic cycle of the university thereby creating an embarrassing situation for the VC."With the DU faculty not there to teach, no academic progress is possible by the new system which aims to overtake the existing. Teachers will keep themselves away from all kinds of work involved in the implementation of the semester system. It would then become impossible for the administration to implement it," said Aditya Narayan Mishra, President, DUTA.

Imbroglio

One can easily understand the problem at hand as the implementation of the semester system depends on 7000 DU teachers and without their support things could get really out of hand. The lack of mutual understanding is certainly a shame for the university and demands a flexible and progressive outlook from all the stakeholders.

Semester Dynamics

As per the present system of the university, the whole syllabus is covered during one year. The semester system would juggle up things and the course would be divided into two halves. Professional courses of the University like MBA, MIB, MFC, MBE alongside courses like B.A (Hons) Business Economics, Bachelors in Business Studies and BFIA have been following this system from a long time now. The system has stimulated a mixed response from the stakeholders as some students believe that it will help them manage their time well while the teachers are not really convinced. The teachers complain that they were not even consulted regarding the implementation procedure and so the responsibility does not lie on them. Rajib Ray, member of academic council of DU said that, "DU has its own character and it would be compromised if the semester system is incorporated.”

The losing side

The only party to lose out would be the students if this tiff is to continue for long and given the high interest that the University generates it will be a real shame if this agitation is to continue for long.
